What should you know about cold feeling in hands?

Blood vessels in the skin narrow when the body is cold or under stress, reducing warm blood flow to the fingers. The sensation may settle after gentle warming. Ongoing symptoms can occur with anaemia, an underactive thyroid, or reduced blood supply to the limbs. Iron deficiency anaemia may also cause tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness, or dizziness. Note whether both hands are affected, whether fingers change colour, and whether numbness, pain, sores, or weakness occur.

Cold hands do not identify one diagnosis on their own. A clinician may ask about medicines, smoking, medical history, diet, and exposure to cold, then examine the skin, pulses, sensation, and movement.

Warm your hands gradually with gloves, warm clothing, and movement. Avoid placing numb skin directly against very hot water or a heater. Keep the rest of your body warm, take regular movement breaks, and avoid smoking. Record triggers, colour changes, duration, and accompanying symptoms. Do not start iron supplementation simply because your hands feel cold; iron treatment should follow assessment of an actual deficiency.

Arrange a routine appointment if cold hands keep returning, interfere with sleep or daily tasks, or occur with fatigue, weight change, tingling, or leg symptoms. Seek urgent care if one hand suddenly becomes cold, pale or blue, painful, weak, or difficult to move, or if a wound does not heal. Sudden severe symptoms need prompt assessment because they can signal a circulation problem.

Ask whether your pattern suggests a circulation, thyroid, or blood-related issue; whether you need blood tests; and which warning signs should prompt urgent help. Bring a list of medicines and a note of colour changes or triggers.
