Cod liver oil during breast cancer care

Do not use it in place of surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy or chemotherapy prescribed for breast cancer. If you want to take it for nutrition, show the exact product label to your oncology team or pharmacist before starting.

Cod liver oil commonly supplies omega fatty acids plus vitamins A and D. Formulations and serving sizes differ, and the same nutrients may already be present in multivitamins, fortified foods or prescribed products. Combining sources can create an excessive intake without obvious early symptoms.

Vitamin A can accumulate in the body, and high intake is particularly concerning during pregnancy. Oil supplements may also affect bleeding considerations for people taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines or preparing for an operation. These issues concern safety and coordination; they do not mean every person with breast cancer must avoid the supplement.

Bring a photograph of the front label, ingredient panel and suggested serving to your next visit. List every vitamin, herbal remedy and over-the-counter medicine you use. Ask whether the combined vitamin A and D intake is appropriate and whether the oil should be paused before a procedure.

If poor appetite, weight change or treatment side effects are driving your interest, request advice from an oncology dietitian. They can focus on the specific nutritional gap while accounting for nausea, diarrhoea, mouth soreness, bone health and the treatment plan. Continue scheduled breast imaging and prescribed cancer therapy regardless of supplement use.

Stop the supplement and contact a clinician if you develop a new rash, persistent vomiting, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe headache, marked weakness, or other symptoms that begin after taking it. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood or heavy uncontrolled bleeding.

Ask whether cod liver oil interacts with your current medicines, whether your blood tests or diet suggest a need for supplementation, and whether a simpler product would address that need. Before an operation, clarify when all supplements should be stopped and when they may be restarted.
