Coccydynia symptoms and warning signs

Short answer
Coccydynia usually presents as focused pain and tenderness over the tailbone, often aggravated by sitting, rising from a chair, leaning back, or having a bowel movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main feature
- Localised pain and tenderness at the base of the spine
- Common triggers
- Sitting, rising, leaning back, and direct pressure
- Helpful record
- Note triggers, injury history, skin changes, and any nerve symptoms
How the symptom pattern feels
The discomfort sits at the very bottom of the spine rather than spreading broadly across the lower back. It may be a dull ache between movements and become sharp when pressure shifts onto or away from the coccyx. The spot is often tender when pressed, and firm seating or a long journey can aggravate it.
Some people notice pain during bowel movements or sexual activity because nearby pelvic muscles and tissues move around the coccyx. Symptoms can follow a fall onto the buttocks, childbirth, or repeated pressure, yet they can also begin without a memorable injury. Pain alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do about typical symptoms
Shorten sitting periods and alternate between sitting, standing, and walking. Keep the lower back supported and try a coccyx cut-out cushion that removes pressure from the painful point. Side-lying may be more comfortable for rest. If constipation increases pain, discuss safe stool-softening measures with a pharmacist or clinician.
Book a clinical assessment when symptoms keep returning, limit sleep or work, or fail to settle with pressure reduction. Examination can check whether the tenderness truly comes from the coccyx and whether hip, pelvic-floor, skin, or lower-spine problems need consideration. Physiotherapy may address posture, movement, and muscle tension when those factors contribute.
Symptoms that need faster assessment
Get prompt help if tailbone pain comes with fever, a hot or draining swelling, unexplained worsening at rest, or feeling acutely unwell. Seek urgent assessment after major trauma or when pain makes it hard to stand or walk. New weakness in either leg, numbness around the groin or buttocks, or loss of bladder or bowel control needs emergency care.
What to discuss at an appointment
Describe the exact point of pain, its onset, any injury, which seats provoke it, and whether bowel movements or pelvic symptoms change it. Ask what the examination suggests, whether imaging would alter management, and which movements you should continue. Also clarify what improvement to expect before considering additional treatment.

Questions people ask
Can coccydynia feel like lower-back pain?
It can be described that way, but the most characteristic tenderness is lower and more focused, directly over the coccyx at the top of the buttock crease.
Does coccydynia cause pain while walking?
Walking may be comfortable for some people because it removes sitting pressure. Pain during walking can occur, but marked difficulty walking warrants assessment for injury or another cause.
