What should you know about CO2 laser?

Depending on the device settings and treatment plan, the beam may treat the entire surface or be delivered in small columns with untreated skin between them. A clinician chooses the approach according to the concern, skin type, treatment area, and desired downtime.

CO2 laser can be used for skin texture changes, selected scars such as acne scars, fine lines, and some areas of uneven pigmentation. It works by creating controlled thermal injury in the skin. The healing response can stimulate collagen remodeling, while the treated surface sheds and is replaced by newer skin.

The term CO2 laser describes the energy source, not one identical procedure. Fractional treatment generally limits the treated area within each pass, while fully ablative treatment removes more of the surface and may require a longer recovery. Treatment near the eyes, mouth, or other sensitive areas needs especially careful planning.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about recent tanning or sun exposure, a history of cold sores, active acne or infection, keloid or raised scarring, medicines that affect healing, and any previous laser or cosmetic procedures. Do not apply irritant products to the treatment area unless the clinic has included them in your plan.

After treatment, the skin may be red, swollen, warm, tender, or moist. Follow the prescribed cleansing and dressing instructions, keep the area protected from sunlight, and avoid picking peeling skin. Makeup, exfoliants, retinoids, swimming, exercise, or shaving may need to wait until the surface has recovered; the clinician should give you the timing for your procedure.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, swelling, redness, or drainage is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop spreading redness, pus, fever, blisters, or a new cold-sore cluster. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, marked facial swelling, eye pain, or any change in vision.

A darker or lighter patch can occur during healing, especially after inflammation. Report a persistent or rapidly changing colour change so the clinician can assess it and adjust aftercare.

Ask which CO2 approach is proposed, what result is realistic for your specific scar or texture concern, how long the treated surface may need wound care, and which products should be stopped before and after treatment. Also ask how your skin tone, tanning history, cold-sore history, and tendency to form raised scars affect the plan.
