What should you know about CO2 laser and subcision?

CO2 laser is an energy treatment that creates controlled columns of heat in the skin. As the treated area heals, it can soften uneven texture and stimulate new collagen. Subcision uses a fine needle or blade beneath the scar to release fibrous bands pulling the surface downward. A combination can therefore target a rough surface and an indentation fixed to deeper tissue, but it is not suitable for every scar.

The plan may change according to rolling, boxcar or ice-pick features, active acne, previous dark marks, cold-sore history and the skin's tendency to form raised scars.

Ask whether the scar is tethered, whether laser alone could address it, and whether subcision should be staged before resurfacing. Your clinician may review medicines, recent tanning, skincare ingredients and any history of prolonged redness or pigmentation after injury. After treatment, follow the wound-care instructions, avoid picking flakes, protect the area from sunlight and pause irritating products until the skin barrier has recovered. Swelling, redness, warmth and crusting can occur during healing.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness spreads, discharge develops, fever occurs, or the treated area becomes increasingly swollen. New blistering, marked colour change or eye symptoms also need timely assessment. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe allergic reaction.
