What should you know about CO2 laser?

CO2 laser energy is absorbed by water in skin cells. Depending on the settings, it can vaporise a thin surface layer or create controlled columns of heat while leaving surrounding skin available for healing. Clinicians may consider it for texture changes, some scars, lines, or other carefully assessed concerns. The depth and pattern matter: stronger resurfacing can involve more visible redness, crusting, swelling, and recovery. Skin type, the treated area, previous scarring, cold-sore history, and current inflammation all affect planning.

Have a consultation before treatment so the clinician can examine the concern and review medicines, allergies, tanning, active acne, eczema, and infection. Follow instructions about cleansing, antiviral or other prescribed medicines, and sun avoidance. After treatment, use the wound care plan exactly as given; do not peel crusts or restart irritating products early. Keep the area protected from sunlight because recently treated skin can react more readily and develop uneven colour. Recovery varies with treatment depth and body site.

Contact the treating team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, worsening swelling, or blisters. Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling affecting the eye, vision changes, or rapidly worsening skin injury.
