What should you know about cluster headache after drinking alcohol?

Cluster headache may cause severe one-sided pain around the eye, with tearing, redness, nasal blockage or restlessness. For some people, alcohol is a rapid trigger while attacks are occurring in a cluster period. This pattern does not mean every headache after drinking is cluster headache: dehydration, sleep disruption, migraine, facial pain and other causes can overlap.

Record the drink, amount, timing, sleep, food, water intake and symptoms. The timing of pain after alcohol, the side affected and the presence of eye or nasal changes help a clinician assess the pattern.

Avoid alcohol if it has repeatedly brought on attacks, particularly while you are waiting for assessment. Drink water, keep regular meals and protect your sleep, but do not use these measures as a substitute for a treatment plan.
