What should you know about cloudy yellow urine in the morning?

During sleep, urine collects for several hours and may appear more yellow or smell stronger when you wake. Cloudiness can also result from crystals, mucus, or cells. It may clear after drinking and urinating later in the day. A urinary tract infection presents with cloudy urine in some people and may also cause burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal pain. A kidney infection presents with urinary symptoms alongside fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or marked weakness. Morning timing does not diagnose any of these conditions.

Drink fluids according to your usual medical advice and compare the first urine with later samples. Avoid judging the cause by colour alone. Note burning, urgency, pain, blood, fever, unusual discharge, or a new smell. If the appearance stays cloudy through the day, continues for more than a brief spell, or keeps returning, arrange a clinician review and ask whether a urine test is appropriate.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or trouble passing urine. Seek urgent help if you feel severely unwell or cannot keep fluids down. If you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have reduced immunity, report persistent urinary changes without waiting for them to settle.
