Cloudy urine with odour but no pain

Urine becomes more concentrated after fluid loss or drinking less, which can make its smell stronger and its appearance cloudy. Certain foods, vitamins, and medicines can also alter odour. A urinary tract infection may present with cloudy or strong-smelling urine even when pain is absent; urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal pressure, or a change in amount may provide additional clues. A kidney infection is more concerning when fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or side and back pain develop. Smell and cloudiness cannot confirm infection by themselves.

Consider recent heat exposure, exercise, fluid loss, dietary changes, and new medicines or supplements. Drink normally to thirst unless your clinician has set a fluid limit. Observe the urine over the next few bathroom visits and note any urgency, frequency, burning, blood, fever, or change in volume. Arrange an assessment if the odour and cloudiness persist, recur, or are difficult to explain. A urine sample can help identify infection or other findings.

Seek prompt medical attention for cloudy, strong-smelling urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or inability to urinate. Contact a clinician soon during pregnancy or with diabetes, kidney disease, or reduced immunity. Absence of pain does not rule out a urinary problem when other warning signs appear.
