Cloudy urine during your period: what to know

Blood or vaginal discharge can enter the toilet bowl or a urine container during menstruation, making urine appear cloudy even when the urinary tract is not the source. Dehydration can also concentrate urine, particularly if cramps, nausea, or a busy day have reduced drinking.

A urinary tract infection presents with cloudy urine when bacteria and inflammatory cells are present, often alongside burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. A kidney infection presents with fever, chills, nausea, or side and back pain as well. Cloudiness alone cannot distinguish these causes.

If you feel well, compare the appearance after the period ends and drink fluids regularly. For a clearer check, wash your hands, use a clean container, and collect a midstream sample; tell the clinician that you are menstruating because blood contamination can affect interpretation.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, vomiting, new side or back pain, visible blood outside the expected menstrual bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. Severe weakness, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down needs urgent help. A kidney infection can worsen without treatment.
