Cloudy urine without pain or smell

A lack of smell does not rule in or rule out a urinary condition. Cloudiness can come from concentrated urine, mineral crystals, mucus, or cells released into the sample. An infection may be present without a strong odour, burning, or pain, particularly early on. The appearance can also be affected by vaginal discharge, semen, menstrual blood, or the way the sample was collected. Looking at the urine alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.

Drink according to thirst and your usual medical advice, then see whether the appearance changes during the day. Use a clean container if a clinician asks for a sample, and tell them about supplements, medicines, discharge, or recent sexual activity when relevant. Book an appointment if cloudiness lasts, keeps recurring, or occurs with urgency, frequency, burning, blood, or lower abdominal discomfort. Testing is more useful than smell as a way to investigate infection.

Get prompt care for fever, shivering, nausea, vomiting, flank pain, marked weakness, confusion, or trouble urinating. Seek earlier advice during pregnancy or if you have kidney problems, diabetes, a catheter, or a weakened immune system. A kidney infection may cause illness and back or side pain even when urine has no noticeable smell.

Ask which urine test is appropriate, whether the sample should be repeated, and how quickly you should expect advice. Share when the cloudiness began, whether it follows meals or exercise, and any genital or urinary symptoms, even if they seem unrelated.
