Cloudy urine first thing in the morning: what to know

Urine becomes more concentrated overnight because you are not drinking while asleep. This can make it look darker or hazier when you first pass it. It should become clearer after ordinary fluid intake. Cloudiness can also come from crystals, mucus, skin cells, or inflammation in the urinary tract. A urinary tract infection may present with cloudy urine alongside burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. A kidney infection may present with cloudy urine and fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the change is limited to the first urine of the day and whether it clears later. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them; do not force large amounts. Record burning, urgency, pain, fever, blood, smell, and any new medicine or supplement. If the appearance continues, arrange a clinician review. Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, visible blood, or feeling markedly unwell. Contact a clinician soon if cloudiness persists, keeps returning, or comes with burning, urgency, or difficulty passing urine.
