Cloudy urine but no other symptoms

Urine can look hazy when it is concentrated, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply drinking less. Mineral crystals, mucus, or cells can also change its appearance. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause and does not by itself confirm an infection. A urinary tract infection may sometimes begin with a change in urine appearance before discomfort develops; kidney infection is more concerning when fever, chills, back or side pain, or feeling very unwell appears.

Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and notice whether the next few samples become clearer. Avoid judging the colour from a toilet bowl containing cleaning products. Record when the cloudiness occurs, whether it follows exercise or sexual activity, and any change in smell, frequency, or amount. If it continues, arrange a urine assessment; testing can look for infection, blood, protein, or crystals rather than relying on appearance alone.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, visible blood, difficulty passing urine, swelling, or marked weakness. Pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for contacting a clinician. If cloudiness keeps returning despite normal hydration, book a routine appointment.

Ask whether you need a urine dipstick or culture, whether medicines or supplements could affect the sample, and which changes should trigger an earlier review.
