Cloudy pee and blood in urine: what to know

Cloudiness may come from white blood cells, crystals, mucus, or concentrated urine. Blood can arise anywhere from the kidneys to the bladder or urethra. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine, burning, urgency, and blood; kidney stones can irritate the urinary lining and cause sharp side or back pain. In men, prostatitis or benign prostate enlargement may affect urine flow and cause bleeding. Less commonly, bladder or prostate cancer can present with blood in urine. A blood-stained urine sample does not by itself identify the cause.

Arrange a prompt GP or clinic assessment. A clinician may ask when the colour changed, whether you have pain or fever, and whether you take medicines that affect bleeding. Urine testing can look for blood, infection, and crystals; further tests depend on the findings. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and do not take leftover antibiotics. Note whether the urine is pink, red, or brown and whether clots are present.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, are passing clots, have severe flank or abdominal pain, fever with shaking chills, vomiting, faintness, or feel markedly unwell. Blood in urine during pregnancy, after an injury, or while taking blood-thinning medicine also warrants prompt clinical advice.
