Short answer

Clostridium difficile diarrhoea is a bowel infection that can follow antibiotic use and needs medical assessment when symptoms are persistent or severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
A change in bowel bacteria can allow C. difficile to multiply.
Main concern
Ongoing diarrhoea can lead to dehydration.
Testing
A clinician may use a stool sample when appropriate.

What it means

Clostridioides difficile, also called C. difficile, is a bacterium that can multiply when antibiotics disturb the normal balance of bowel bacteria. It may cause frequent loose or watery stools, cramping, tenderness, fever, nausea or loss of appetite. Symptoms can begin during antibiotics or after a course has finished. A clinician may ask about recent medicines, healthcare contact and stool changes, then arrange a stool test when appropriate. Diarrhoea has many other causes, including gastroenteritis, food poisoning, food intolerance, coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, giardiasis, irritable bowel syndrome and hyperthyroidism, so the symptom alone does not identify C. difficile.

What to do now

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop repeated diarrhoea after taking antibiotics or after a recent healthcare stay. Do not start leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without advice. Drink frequent small amounts of fluid; oral rehydration solution may help replace water and salts. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food, and clean shared bathroom surfaces. If treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and ask whether a medicine you currently take should be reviewed. Avoid preparing food for other people while unwell.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for ongoing diarrhoea, fever, marked weakness, or symptoms in an older adult, a pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity. A return of diarrhoea after treatment also deserves review because symptoms can recur and dehydration can develop.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could a recent antibiotic or healthcare stay explain these symptoms? Do I need a stool test? Which fluids and foods are suitable while I recover? Should any current medicines be paused or changed? What signs mean I should return urgently, and how should I reduce spread at home?

Questions people ask

Can C. difficile diarrhoea happen after antibiotics?

Yes. Symptoms may start during antibiotic treatment or after it ends, so mention recent medicines to a clinician.

Should I take an anti-diarrhoeal medicine?

Ask a clinician first, because some medicines may be unsuitable when an infection is suspected.
