Closed reduction for a hip dislocation

It is performed in a clinical setting with pain control or sedation because the surrounding muscles are strong and the joint must be moved carefully. The team checks the leg's circulation, sensation, and movement before and after the manoeuvre. Imaging can confirm joint position and look for an associated fracture.

A clinician applies controlled traction and guides the thigh so the top of the femur can return to the hip socket. Medication helps relax the muscles and limits pain during manipulation. An examination and imaging then help show whether the joint is aligned and stable. If a fracture, trapped tissue, or persistent instability prevents a safe closed reduction, an operation may be needed instead.

A hip dislocation can also injure cartilage, bone, blood vessels, or the sciatic nerve. Putting the joint back is therefore only one part of care; follow-up assesses these structures and guides safe return to weight-bearing.

Follow the exact weight-bearing and movement restrictions given at discharge. Use crutches or another walking aid as instructed, take prescribed medicines only as directed, and avoid driving while sedation or pain medicine affects alertness. Do not force hip stretches or test the joint's range on your own.

Keep follow-up appointments even when pain is settling. The clinician may repeat imaging, review leg strength and sensation, and decide when rehabilitation should begin. Physiotherapy can rebuild movement, muscle control, and walking confidence within the precautions chosen for the injury.

Seek emergency care if the hip looks deformed again, the leg becomes shorter or fixed in an unusual position, or severe pain suddenly returns. Do not try to push the hip back yourself.

Urgent assessment is also needed for a cold or pale foot, a weak or absent pulse, spreading numbness, new difficulty moving the ankle or toes, or rapidly increasing swelling. Fever, worsening redness, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness also warrant prompt medical attention.

Ask whether imaging found a fracture or cartilage injury, how much weight you may place through the leg, and which hip positions to avoid. Clarify when you can return to work, driving, sport, and physiotherapy, and whom to contact if pain or numbness increases.
