Clogged nose and itchy throat: what to know

Allergic rhinitis can cause itching, repeated sneezing, clear discharge and congestion, often after contact with pollen, dust or animals. A common cold may bring a blocked or runny nose, scratchy throat, cough and tiredness. Dry air, smoke and strong scents can irritate the throat without causing an infection. An itchy throat after eating may point to an allergy; swelling of the lips, tongue or throat is an emergency rather than a routine allergy symptom.

Rest, drink fluids and try warm drinks or lozenges if they soothe your throat. Saline nasal spray or a gentle rinse can loosen mucus. Avoid smoke and known triggers, and wash hands when cold symptoms are circulating. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication or other symptom relief, taking account of your age, pregnancy, medical conditions and current medicines. Avoid sharing antibiotics or using someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, drooling, faintness or swelling of the mouth, lips or tongue. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, keep returning, or come with high fever, severe facial pain or dehydration. A clinician can distinguish allergic rhinitis, a cold, sinus disease or another cause from the history and examination.

Ask whether the timing suggests an allergy or infection, whether testing is useful, and which medicine suits you. Describe any food, dust, pet, seasonal or workplace link, plus wheezing, eye symptoms or a rash.
