Clinical manifestations of deep vein thrombosis

Short answer
Deep vein thrombosis can cause swelling, pain, warmth, or colour change in one limb, but some people have no noticeable symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What should you know about clinical manifestation of DVT?
DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, most often in the leg. The affected calf or thigh may feel tender, heavy, tight, or sore, particularly when standing or walking. These findings can overlap with muscle injury and other conditions, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a clot.
What the symptoms can mean
DVT commonly presents with symptoms affecting one side rather than both legs. Swelling may develop over hours or more gradually. The skin can feel warmer than the surrounding area and may look red, darker, or bluish. A superficial vein may become more visible, although this is not specific to DVT.
A clot can occur without obvious leg symptoms. A clinician may consider recent surgery, prolonged immobility, pregnancy, a previous clot, cancer, hormone medicines, or another risk factor alongside the examination. Ultrasound is commonly used to assess blood flow and look for a clot.
What to do if DVT is possible
Arrange prompt medical assessment for new one-sided leg swelling, unexplained calf pain, warmth, or colour change, especially after travel, bed rest, an operation, or another clot risk. Do not massage a painful swollen leg while waiting for advice, because a suspected clot needs assessment rather than home treatment.
A healthcare professional may examine both limbs, review your history, and decide whether blood testing or imaging is needed. If DVT is diagnosed, treatment may include an anticoagulant to reduce clot growth and lower the chance of the clot travelling. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and report unusual bleeding promptly.
When to seek emergency care
Call emergency services immediately for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that may worsen with breathing, coughing up blood, fainting, severe dizziness, or a rapid or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms can indicate that a clot has travelled to the lungs, known as a pulmonary embolism.
Do not drive yourself if you have breathing difficulty, chest pain, or feel faint. While waiting for help, sit or lie in a safe position, keep your phone nearby, and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.
Questions for your doctor
Useful questions include: Could my symptoms be caused by a clot or another condition? Do I need an ultrasound or another test? Which symptoms should make me seek emergency help? If treatment is prescribed, when should I take it and what bleeding signs should I report?

Questions people ask
Can DVT occur without symptoms?
Yes. Some people with DVT have subtle symptoms or no noticeable leg changes, which is why risk factors and clinical assessment matter.
Does DVT always cause swelling in the whole leg?
No. Swelling may be limited to the calf, ankle, or thigh, and it may be accompanied by tenderness, warmth, or colour change on one side.
When are DVT symptoms an emergency?
Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, or severe dizziness may signal a pulmonary embolism and requires emergency care.
