What should you know about clinical features of DVT?

The rash may begin as small red or pink spots, then develop into fluid-filled blisters before scabbing. New spots can appear while older ones are healing, so different stages may be visible together. It often starts on the chest, back, or face and can spread. Fever, headache, reduced appetite, and fatigue may occur before or alongside the rash.

A similar-looking rash can occur with shingles, insect bites, eczema, or another infection. Shingles is usually limited to one side of the body, whereas chickenpox is more widespread. A clinician can examine the pattern and consider age, exposure, vaccination, and immune health.

Avoid scratching, keep nails short, and use gentle skin care. Stay away from people who are pregnant, very young, or immunocompromised until a clinician confirms you are no longer contagious. Do not give aspirin to a child with a suspected viral illness. A GP consultation can clarify the diagnosis and whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, particularly for people at higher risk of complications.

Arrange medical advice for a rapidly worsening rash, persistent fever, severe headache, breathing difficulty, confusion, marked drowsiness, or signs of infected blisters such as increasing pain, warmth, swelling, or pus. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, or a child who is difficult to wake. Do not rely on rash frequency to judge urgency.

Ask whether the rash is chickenpox or another infection, when it is safe to return to school or work, and whether anyone exposed needs specific advice. Mention pregnancy, immune conditions, recent contact with chickenpox, and vaccination history.
