What should you know about clindamycin topical for folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. Bacteria can be one cause, while friction, shaving, ingrown hairs, yeast, or another skin problem can produce similar bumps. Clindamycin is a topical antibiotic that reduces susceptible bacteria on the skin. It will not treat every type of folliculitis, and using an antibiotic when bacteria are not the cause can delay the right care.

Use the product exactly as directed on clean, dry skin, avoiding the eyes, lips, and broken skin. Mild dryness, redness, stinging, or peeling can occur. Do not share the medicine or apply extra product to speed improvement.

Follow the prescribed schedule and complete the advised course unless a clinician tells you to stop. Wash gently, avoid scrubbing the bumps, and pause shaving or reduce friction over the affected area while it settles. Do not combine several irritating acne or exfoliating products without checking first. A clinician may need to reassess persistent bumps, drainage, or a rash that spreads.

Seek prompt medical advice if pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or redness is worsening, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Stop the medicine and seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or severe watery or bloody diarrhoea. These symptoms need assessment rather than simply increasing treatment.

Ask whether the bumps fit bacterial folliculitis, how long to use clindamycin, and what to do if the area does not improve. Mention previous antibiotic reactions, bowel problems, pregnancy, and all creams or medicines you use.
