What should you know about clindamycin for tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis means inflamed tonsils and may be caused by viruses or bacteria such as those responsible for strep throat. Clindamycin is an antibiotic, so it does not help viral inflammation. A clinician may consider it when bacterial infection is supported and another antibiotic is unsuitable, including because of an allergy or previous treatment history. Follow the label for dose timing and course length. Swallow capsules with plenty of water and remain upright after taking them. Do not share leftover antibiotics or save doses for another illness.
