Clindamycin for bacterial vaginosis

It reduces bacteria associated with the vaginal imbalance. It may be supplied as a vaginal preparation or an oral medicine. The correct form, schedule and course depend on the prescription, so follow its label rather than switching between products.

Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the usual balance of vaginal bacteria changes. Typical features include a thin discharge and a noticeable odour, but symptoms alone cannot reliably distinguish it from thrush, a sexually transmitted infection or irritation.

Clindamycin treats susceptible bacteria; it does not treat fungal infection. Symptoms can return after treatment, and recurrence does not necessarily mean the medicine was used incorrectly. Reassessment helps confirm the cause before another course is taken.

Complete the prescribed course even if discharge or odour improves earlier. If you miss a dose, consult the medicine leaflet or pharmacist rather than doubling the next one. Tell the prescriber about allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, bowel disease and other medicines.

Some vaginal clindamycin products can weaken latex condoms or diaphragms during use and for a period afterward. Check the specific leaflet and arrange an alternative barrier method when advised. Do not douche, because it can further disturb vaginal bacteria.

Contact a clinician if symptoms worsen, fail to settle after the course, or quickly return. New itching or a thick discharge may suggest thrush and needs the right diagnosis rather than leftover antibiotics.

Get urgent medical help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering rash. Severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea during treatment or after it ends needs prompt assessment because clindamycin can cause serious bowel inflammation. Pelvic pain, fever, vomiting or bleeding also warrants timely examination.

Confirm how to apply or take the medicine, what to do after a missed dose, whether the product affects your contraception, which side effects require stopping, and whether testing for other infections is appropriate.
