Before relying on care instructions, ask the casting team to identify the material and whether any outer layer is only a protector. Water resistance, weight-bearing rules, drying time, and removal methods vary between products. Never assume a cast is waterproof because part of it looks clear.

Plaster of Paris is a mouldable casting material that hardens around padding to support an injured or corrected body part. Its smooth moulding can help clinicians hold a chosen position, but the hardened material does not allow a clear view of the skin beneath it.

A transparent item may instead be a removable cover, a window incorporated for inspection, or a different immobilization product. Altering a window or peeling away layers can weaken support or injure the skin. Only the treating team should cut, reshape, reinforce, or remove the cast.

Keep traditional plaster dry and protect it from dirt. Do not push objects, powders, creams, or oils under the cast to manage itching. Check exposed fingers or toes for colour, warmth, movement, sensation, and swelling, comparing them with the opposite side when practical. Elevation may help early swelling if your care team has recommended it.

Follow the exact weight-bearing and movement instructions for the injury or correction. Contact the casting service if the cast cracks, softens, becomes loose, develops a persistent bad smell, rubs the skin, or becomes wet inside. A damp cast and padding can damage skin even when the outer surface later feels dry.

Seek urgent assessment if pain becomes severe or keeps increasing despite the advised measures, swelling feels tightly trapped, or fingers or toes become blue, pale, cold, numb, difficult to move, or unusually swollen. Fever, spreading redness, drainage, a strong new odour with worsening pain, or a sensation that the cast is burning the skin also needs prompt attention. Do not cut the cast yourself while waiting for care.

Ask for the exact name of the cast and liner, whether either can get wet, and how to protect them during washing. Confirm which joints should move, whether the limb may take weight, how to handle itching, whom to call if the fit changes, and how removal will be arranged.
