How to Clean Cradle Cap Gently

Short answer
Clean cradle cap gently by loosening scales before washing, using a mild baby shampoo, and never picking or scraping the scalp.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap is
Cradle cap is a common form of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It often appears as greasy yellow, white, or brown scales on the scalp, sometimes with mild redness. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is usually not painful or itchy, although a baby can have another scalp problem at the same time.
The aim of cleaning is to soften and lift loose scale while protecting the delicate skin underneath. Removing every flake in one wash is unnecessary. Scales can return because the skin is still producing oil and shedding cells; recurrence does not mean that you have cleaned incorrectly.
A gentle cleaning routine
Before the bath, apply a small amount of plain emollient to the affected scalp and leave it briefly to soften the scale. Wash with mild baby shampoo and lukewarm water, keeping product away from the eyes. Use fingertips or a soft baby brush to massage very lightly, then rinse well. Let loosened flakes come away without force.
Do not scratch, pick, scrape, or pull attached scales. Avoid essential oils, adult dandruff products, and fragranced products unless a clinician has specifically advised them for your baby. Keep nails short if your baby rubs the scalp. If scale is extensive or does not improve with gentle care, a clinician may discuss emollient therapy or another treatment suited to the infant's age and skin.
When your baby needs medical advice
Contact a clinician if the scalp becomes very red, swollen, warm, painful, wet, bleeding, or foul-smelling, or if blisters, pus, or spreading rash appear. Seek prompt advice if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, feeds poorly, or is unusually sleepy. Those signs are not explained by simple scale and should not be managed by more vigorous cleaning.
Arrange a routine review when the rash spreads beyond the scalp, involves the face or body, causes marked itch, or keeps returning despite gentle washing. A clinician can check for eczema, infection, or a different cause and may recommend a carefully chosen topical antifungal treatment when appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance is typical cradle cap, which emollient and shampoo are suitable, how often to wash, whether treatment is needed for another body area, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Should you remove every cradle-cap flake?
No. Soften the scale and allow loose flakes to wash away gradually; forcing attached scale can injure the scalp.
Can cradle cap be treated with an antifungal product?
Sometimes, but an infant's rash should be assessed first so the product and instructions match the diagnosis and age.
