What should you know about Clark's staging of melanoma?

Clark's system divides invasion according to the skin structure reached by melanoma cells under microscopic examination. It can help describe how a lesion grew downward, particularly in older reports. It does not show the whole picture of risk or spread, and the level may be less useful when tumour thickness can be measured reliably.

A current staging discussion may include tumour thickness, ulceration, lymph-node involvement, distant spread, and other pathology findings. A Clark level does not mean that melanoma has spread, and a symptom or skin change does not establish a stage. Ask for the exact wording of the pathology report and whether the tumour was completely removed.
