Short answer

Melanoma is a skin cancer requiring prompt specialist assessment, because examination and pathology guide whether surgery, lymph-node testing, or additional treatment is appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What melanoma involves

Melanoma develops from melanocytes, the cells that make pigment. It may appear as a new mark or as a change in an existing mole: uneven shape, irregular colour, a changing border, growth, itching, bleeding, or a sore that does not heal. These features do not prove melanoma, and many skin marks are benign, but a changing lesion should be examined. A biopsy lets a pathologist assess the tissue and helps the team understand the depth and other features that shape treatment.

What happens after concern is raised

Arrange a prompt dermatology appointment for a changing or suspicious lesion and avoid trying to remove it yourself. Photographing the area can help show change, while a clinician may examine the whole skin surface and nearby lymph nodes. Treatment commonly begins with surgical removal of the lesion and a margin of surrounding skin. Depending on the pathology, a sentinel lymph node biopsy, wider surgery, or medicines such as immunotherapy may be discussed. The plan depends on the individual diagnosis, not on the appearance alone.

When to seek care

Seek timely medical review for a mark that changes, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or differs from your other moles. Get urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading redness after a procedure, severe wound pain, fever, or confusion. New neurological symptoms such as a severe headache, weakness, seizure, or unusual confusion need emergency assessment; in someone with known cancer, the team may investigate several causes, including spread to the brain.

Questions for your doctor

What did the biopsy show, and what features determine the stage? Do I need further excision or sentinel lymph-node assessment? Which treatment options apply to my result? How often should my skin and lymph nodes be checked, and which symptoms should I report between visits?

Questions people ask

Does every changing mole mean melanoma?

No. Many changing skin marks are benign, but change, bleeding, or an unusual appearance should be assessed rather than diagnosed at home.

Why can lymph-node testing be discussed?

It can help the treatment team assess whether melanoma cells have reached the first draining lymph node and plan care.
