What should you know about CIU hives?

Chronic idiopathic urticaria is also called chronic spontaneous urticaria. Raised, pale or pink welts can appear on different parts of the body, fade, and return elsewhere. Individual welts often change quickly, while the overall problem can continue for weeks or longer. Itching is common, and some people also develop deeper swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet, known as angioedema. The absence of an obvious trigger does not mean the symptoms are imagined; the skin is releasing inflammatory chemicals that cause the surface swelling and itch.

Keep a simple record of flare timing, new medicines, infections, heat, pressure, exercise, foods, and skin products, but do not start restrictive diets without clinical advice. Use cool compresses, loose clothing, and fragrance-free moisturiser. A clinician may recommend a regular non-drowsy antihistamine and adjust the plan if symptoms continue; take medicines exactly as directed. Avoid scratching, because broken skin can become irritated or infected. Bring photographs of short-lived welts to an appointment if the skin is clear on the day.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction even when the cause of the hives is unclear. Arrange medical assessment for recurrent hives, extensive swelling, bruising or painful lesions, fever, or marks that stay fixed rather than moving or fading. A clinician can distinguish hives from other causes of skin rash and choose treatment safely.
