Citanest local anaesthetic: uses, precautions and aftercare

Prilocaine temporarily interrupts nerve signals near the injection site. This reduces sensation during a procedure without making the patient unconscious. The numb area, onset and duration depend on where and how the medicine is administered and on the formulation used.

In musculoskeletal care, a local anaesthetic may be used around an injection or as part of a diagnostic block. Short-lived pain relief after a precisely placed block can help the clinician interpret where pain is arising, but it does not by itself treat the underlying structural problem.

Before treatment, report previous reactions to local anaesthetics, heart or lung disease, blood disorders, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy, and all medicines. Show the clinician the actual product if it was supplied elsewhere, because formulations may include additional ingredients and are not interchangeable without checking.

Protect the numb area from heat, pressure, biting or accidental injury until normal sensation and control return. Follow procedure-specific advice about driving, eating, walking or using the treated limb. If pain returns as the anaesthetic wears off, use only the pain plan agreed with the treating team.

Tell the clinician immediately about ringing in the ears, a metallic taste, marked dizziness, confusion, shaking, unusual drowsiness, breathing difficulty, an irregular heartbeat or a seizure during or soon after administration. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing trouble, facial or throat swelling, or grey-blue lips or skin. Persistent weakness or numbness beyond the timeframe given for the procedure also needs clinical review.

Ask which formulation will be used, where it will be placed, what sensations to expect, how long precautions should continue and whether another medicine is being injected at the same time. Confirm the plan if the block does not provide adequate numbness and how post-procedure concerns should be reported.
