What should you know about Cipro for prostatitis?

Cipro is a brand name for ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic. A clinician may consider it when prostatitis is thought to involve bacteria that the medicine can treat. Antibiotics do not help every type of prostatitis, so urinary symptoms alone do not establish that Cipro is the right choice.

Prostatitis can cause pain in the pelvis, between the genitals and anus, or in the lower back, along with painful urination, frequent urination, urinary urgency, or difficulty passing urine. A urinary tract infection may occur alongside it. Assessment can include questions about symptoms, an examination, urine testing, and a review of previous infections and antibiotics.

Ciprofloxacin can interact with medicines and supplements, including some products containing minerals. It can also cause side effects involving the stomach, nerves, muscles, tendons, or heart rhythm. Tell the prescriber about tendon problems, nerve symptoms, kidney disease, heart rhythm conditions, pregnancy, and all medicines you use.

Take ciprofloxacin exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Follow the label about food, drinks, and spacing from mineral-containing products. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use an old course for a new episode.

Drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, rest, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Contact the prescriber if symptoms are not improving as expected or return after treatment. A GP consultation can help confirm whether ongoing symptoms need another diagnosis, a different treatment, or specialist review.

Stop the medicine and seek prompt medical advice for tendon pain or swelling, new tingling or numbness, marked weakness, severe diarrhoea, or an allergic reaction. Avoid strenuous exercise if tendon symptoms develop.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop a high fever with shaking chills, become confused or very weak, or have severe worsening pelvic pain. Acute bacterial prostatitis can become serious and may require assessment in a hospital.

Get emergency help for facial swelling, difficulty breathing, fainting, or a severe allergic reaction after a dose. Do not wait for the antibiotic to work when urinary blockage or severe illness is present.
