What should you know about ciliary body melanoma treatment?

The ciliary body is an internal eye structure involved in focusing and fluid production. A melanoma there may affect vision, eye pressure, or the visible position of the pupil, but some tumours cause few early symptoms. Specialist imaging and an eye examination help define the tumour and its relationship to nearby structures.

The team may discuss local treatment intended to control the tumour while preserving the eye when feasible. Depending on findings, treatment can involve surgery, focused radiation, or removal of the eye; the choice is individual. Staging also considers whether disease has spread beyond the eye, because that changes follow-up and treatment discussions.

Ask for referral to an ocular oncology service or another team experienced with eye melanoma. Bring scans, eye records, medicine details, and a list of vision changes. The assessment may include ultrasound or other imaging, examination of the eye, and body imaging when the team is checking for spread.

Treatment options can include tumour removal surgery, selected surgical excision, or immunotherapy in circumstances where systemic treatment is appropriate. A sentinel lymph node biopsy is not automatically suitable for every eye tumour; ask what information it would add in your case. Follow-up after cancer treatment is part of care even when treatment has controlled the visible tumour.

Contact the treating team promptly for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a markedly red eye, new flashes or floaters, or a curtain-like shadow. New neurological symptoms, persistent severe headache, weakness, confusion, or seizures require urgent medical attention because they may signal a serious complication or spread.

Ask: What is the tumour's size and location? Is the optic nerve or nearby tissue involved? What are the goals and trade-offs of each local treatment? Do I need staging tests or a biopsy? How will vision and eye pressure be monitored? What follow-up schedule and warning symptoms should I know?
