Ask your treating team for the pathology report, imaging reports and image files, clinic letters, procedure notes, current medicines and the proposed treatment plan. State the decision you need help with, such as confirming the diagnosis, comparing treatments or deciding whether surgery is appropriate.

Request a clear appointment date and ask whether the review is based on records alone or includes a consultation. Keep your original team informed so they can explain any time-sensitive decision and receive the reviewer’s written recommendations.

A pending second opinion should not delay urgent assessment. Seek prompt care for new severe pain, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down or a fever during cancer treatment. Contact the treating oncology team if symptoms are worsening or a planned procedure is near, so they can advise what can safely wait.

Ask whether the reviewer confirms the pathology and stage, which options fit your goals, what needs to happen before treatment, and what could change if you wait. If the recommendations differ, ask both clinicians to explain the reason, expected benefits, possible harms and how they would coordinate care.
