When urate-lowering therapy is started or adjusted, temporary preventive treatment may be considered because shifting urate levels can trigger inflammation before the crystal burden declines.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or mouth swelling, a widespread blistering rash, or severe illness after a medicine. A hot swollen joint with fever, chills, drainage, or a wound also needs urgent examination because infection cannot be ruled out at home.
