Cholestasis and itchy feet in pregnancy

Cholestasis of pregnancy can cause itching that is especially noticeable on the soles and palms, often without a primary skin rash. It is assessed with your history, examination, and blood tests that measure bile acids and liver function. Itchy feet can also come from Athlete's Foot, Contact Dermatitis, or Dyshidrotic Eczema; these conditions may cause scaling, redness, blisters, or irritation between the toes. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Tell your obstetric or maternity team when the itching began, whether it is worse at night, and whether your palms or other areas itch too. Note any rash, dark urine, pale stools, nausea, or abdominal discomfort. Keep feet cool and dry, use plain moisturiser on intact skin, and avoid new fragranced products. Do not start Topical Antifungal Treatment or other medicine in pregnancy without checking that it is suitable.

Contact maternity care promptly for intense or spreading itch, particularly when there is no visible rash. Seek urgent help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Follow your local maternity service’s instructions about same-day assessment; itching should not be judged by how common it is.
