Short answer

Anyone exposed to contaminated food or water can develop cholera, and quick replacement of lost fluids is the key priority.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Who can be affected

Cholera affects people who swallow Vibrio cholerae, often through unsafe water or food. Symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to sudden, profuse watery stools and vomiting. The illness is especially dangerous when fluid loss outpaces drinking, because dehydration can affect circulation and alertness.

A person’s age, pregnancy, underlying illness, and ability to drink can change how quickly help is needed. Not every person with diarrhoea has cholera, and a person’s symptoms alone cannot identify the bacterium. Clinical assessment is the safest way to decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

How to help someone who may have cholera

Keep the person drinking a correctly prepared oral rehydration solution in frequent small amounts if they are awake and able to swallow. Arrange medical care promptly and record when the diarrhoea or vomiting began, recent travel, and possible water or food exposure.

Wash hands with soap after bathroom use or caregiving, keep drinking water and food preparation separate from contaminated materials, and clean soiled areas according to local health advice. [Oral Rehydration Therapy] covers fluid replacement; [IV Fluid Therapy] may be required when drinking cannot keep up with losses.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, very little urine, a dry mouth with intense thirst, or worsening watery diarrhoea. Do not leave a severely unwell person alone. Babies, older adults, and people with chronic illness need a low threshold for prompt assessment. See [Diarrhoea] for related symptom guidance.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much and how often to offer rehydration fluid, whether the person needs testing or hospital observation, how to protect household members, and which changes should trigger an emergency call.

Questions people ask

Does every person with cholera look severely ill?

No. Illness can vary, but dehydration can worsen quickly, so early advice matters.
