How quickly cholera can change

Short answer
Cholera can worsen quickly after symptoms begin, so start rehydration early and seek urgent care when fluid loss or dehydration appears.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early priority
- Start rehydration when symptoms begin
- Watch closely
- Urine, alertness, thirst, and drinking ability
- Urgent sign
- Inability to drink or very little urine
What timing can look like
After exposure, symptoms may begin after a delay, and the illness can then become intense over a short period. Watery diarrhoea and vomiting may continue to remove fluid even when a person is resting. Thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, cramps, weakness, and reduced urine signal that replacement may not be keeping pace. The exact course varies with the amount lost, age, pregnancy, and other health conditions. A short illness still deserves attention if dehydration signs are present.
What to do early
Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before starting Oral Rehydration Therapy. Prepare it exactly as directed, take small frequent sips, and continue replacing losses after each episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. Arrange medical advice early, especially for a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with kidney or heart disease. IV Fluid Therapy may be required when oral fluids cannot be kept down or dehydration has already become significant. Use safe water and wash hands carefully.
Do not wait with these signs
Seek urgent care for repeated watery stools, ongoing vomiting, fainting, confusion, severe drowsiness, a racing heartbeat, cold skin, very little urine, or inability to drink. Emergency services are appropriate if the person collapses or cannot be woken. Keep the person lying safely on their side if vomiting or drowsy, and give nothing by mouth to someone who cannot swallow safely. Tell clinicians when symptoms began and how much the person has been able to drink.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what changes should prompt a return visit, how to monitor urine and alertness, whether the illness needs testing, and when normal food and activities can resume. Explain the timing of symptoms, recent water or food exposure, and medicines used at home.
