What should you know about cholera affected countries?

How the structures involved in Cholera differ from normal

Short answer

Cholera-affected areas require extra care with drinking water, food, hand hygiene, and early treatment of watery diarrhoea.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main exposure
Unsafe water or food contaminated with stool
Safer choices
Treated water and thoroughly cooked food
Early action
Begin rehydration and seek advice for watery diarrhoea

Why location matters

Cholera risk is linked to contaminated water or food rather than to a country name alone. Risk can change between regions and communities, particularly when sanitation is damaged, clean water is scarce, or many people live close together. Travellers and residents should follow local public-health advice and use water that is bottled, boiled, or treated appropriately. Avoid ice, raw foods, and drinks prepared with uncertain water. Exposure does not guarantee illness, but symptoms can begin with sudden watery diarrhoea and vomiting.

If you are in or returning from an affected area

Drink safe water, wash hands carefully, and choose food that is cooked thoroughly and served hot. If diarrhoea begins, start Oral Rehydration Therapy promptly when the person can drink, and keep taking small frequent sips. Separate towels and clean bathroom surfaces, especially if several people share facilities. Contact a clinician for advice about testing or treatment, and mention the location, dates of travel, water exposure, and symptom onset. Severe dehydration may need IV Fluid Therapy.

When urgent assessment is needed

Get urgent care for inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, very little urine, marked weakness, or rapidly worsening diarrhoea. Seek prompt medical advice for a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or anyone with a condition that makes dehydration more dangerous. Blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms after known exposure should also be assessed. Emergency help is needed if someone collapses or cannot be awakened.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which water and food precautions apply to your destination, whether preventive advice or testing is appropriate, and how to recognise dehydration early. Explain your travel route, living conditions, possible exposure, and any medicines already taken.

Questions people ask

Does visiting an affected country mean I will get cholera?

No. Risk depends on local conditions and what food or water is consumed, so careful hygiene and safe water reduce exposure.

What should I do if diarrhoea starts while travelling?

Use oral rehydration solution, continue safe fluids, and seek medical advice early, especially if vomiting or weakness develops.
