Short answer

Cholera can cause sudden watery diarrhoea, and prompt fluid replacement is the key to preventing dangerous dehydration.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main danger
Rapid dehydration from loss of water and electrolytes
First response
Frequent small sips of oral rehydration solution when safe
Transmission concern
Contaminated water or food can spread infection

What cholera means

Cholera is an infection of the intestine caused by bacteria that can enter the body through contaminated water or food. The illness may produce large amounts of watery stool and vomiting, causing the body to lose water and electrolytes quickly. A person may become weak, thirsty, dizzy, or unusually sleepy as dehydration develops. Some infected people have mild symptoms, while others need urgent medical treatment. The diarrhoea itself does not show how severe the fluid loss will become, so monitoring alertness, urination, drinking ability, and worsening weakness matters.

What to do now

Start oral rehydration solution if the person is awake and able to drink, giving frequent small sips and following the product instructions. Continue offering safe fluids and suitable food as tolerated. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for other people while ill. Do not rely on anti-diarrhoeal medicines or leftover antibiotics without clinical advice. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy in an urgent-care setting.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for repeated vomiting, inability to drink, faintness, confusion, extreme weakness, very little urine, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of severe dehydration. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a chronic illness may deteriorate quickly and should be assessed early. Blood in stool, fever, severe abdominal pain, or diarrhoea after travel or exposure to unsafe water also warrants prompt evaluation. Call emergency services if the person is difficult to wake or collapses.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether testing is needed, how much rehydration solution to give, which warning signs require hospital care, and whether household contacts need advice. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, how often vomiting or diarrhoea occurred, what fluids were taken, and whether there was recent travel or unsafe-water exposure.

Questions people ask

Can cholera be treated?

Yes. Replacing lost fluids and electrolytes is the central treatment; some people need urgent IV fluids and clinician-directed medicines.

Can cholera spread at home?

It can spread when stool or vomit contaminates hands, food, water, or surfaces, so careful handwashing and safe food handling are essential.
