Multiple gallstones: what to know

A scan may show several stones sitting in the gallbladder. The number of stones does not alone determine how serious the finding is; their position, size, movement and effect on bile flow matter. Some people have no symptoms. Others develop episodes of steady pain beneath the right ribs or in the upper abdomen, sometimes after a rich meal, with Indigestion, Nausea or Vomiting. Pain can also arise when a stone irritates the gallbladder or enters a bile duct. Your report should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination.

Keep a note of attacks, including length, location, food triggers and associated symptoms. Book a GP Consultation if attacks recur, disturb sleep or follow a scan finding. Ask whether liver blood tests or further imaging is needed. Until reviewed, choose meals that you tolerate and avoid personal triggers rather than making drastic dietary changes. If stones are causing repeated attacks or inflammation, a clinician may discuss gallbladder surgery. Stones without symptoms may simply be observed.

Go to urgent care when Abdominal Pain is intense, lasts several hours or returns with fever, chills, jaundice, pale stools, dark urine or repeated Vomiting. These features may signal infection or blockage. Severe upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back can occur with Pancreatitis and also needs urgent assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or seriously unwell.

Ask where the stones are located, whether the gallbladder wall or bile ducts look irritated, what symptoms should prompt emergency care, and whether observation or a surgical referral fits your situation.
