What should you know about cholecystitis treatment antibiotics?

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, often caused by a stone obstructing its outlet. Bacteria may be involved, so clinicians can prescribe antibiotics when infection is suspected or the illness is severe. Antibiotics are selected according to the likely organisms, allergies, kidney function, and local prescribing practice. They may reduce infection risk, but they cannot dissolve or extract a stone and may not settle the blockage. Other treatment may be needed to drain the gallbladder or remove it, depending on the findings. Antibiotics used for conditions such as Acute Bronchitis or Conjunctivitis are not automatically suitable for gallbladder inflammation.

Take an antibiotic only when prescribed for you, and follow the dose and timing on the label. Tell the prescriber about allergies, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease, and medicines or supplements you use. Ask what to do if you miss a dose or vomit after taking it. Do not share tablets, save leftovers, or stop early without advice. Report a rash, swelling of the lips or face, breathing difficulty, or severe watery diarrhoea promptly. Because an obstructed gallbladder can continue to worsen despite antibiotics, attend any recommended review and imaging appointment.

Seek urgent care for worsening or severe upper abdominal pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, faintness, or inability to drink. These features may indicate ongoing infection, a blocked bile duct, or another complication requiring hospital treatment. If you have started antibiotics and symptoms are not improving or are getting worse, contact the treating service promptly rather than adding another medicine yourself.
