What should you know about cholecystitis cholelithiasis?

Cholelithiasis means gallstones: solid pieces formed from substances in bile. Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, often after a stone becomes lodged near its outlet. The two terms may appear together because a stone can trigger swelling and ongoing discomfort. Some people have gallstones without symptoms, while an obstructing stone can cause steady pain in the upper right or central abdomen, sometimes spreading toward the back or right shoulder. Indigestion, nausea, and vomiting may accompany the pain. Gallstones are associated with several factors, including excess body weight and rapid weight change, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain keeps returning, follows meals, or is accompanied by nausea. A clinician may examine your abdomen and arrange blood tests or an ultrasound. Keep a note of when pain begins, where it travels, what you ate beforehand, and whether you have fever, dark urine, or pale stools. Until assessed, choose lighter meals if fatty foods trigger discomfort and drink fluids if you can keep them down. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s pain medicine. Treatment depends on whether a stone is present, whether the gallbladder is inflamed, and whether a duct is blocked.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion, faintness, or inability to drink. These signs can occur when inflammation or a blocked bile duct needs prompt treatment. Sudden severe upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back also needs urgent assessment because gallstones can be linked with Pancreatitis. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are rapidly worsening.
