Chills and stomach ache

Influenza can cause chills with nausea, vomiting, or general aches. A Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection may cause chills with lower abdominal or side pain, burning urine, or frequent urination. Pneumonia can occasionally cause abdominal discomfort alongside cough or breathing symptoms. Dengue Fever and Malaria are important possibilities after travel or mosquito exposure, particularly with fever and marked body aches. Sepsis is a serious body-wide response to infection and may involve feeling very unwell, confusion, or fast breathing.

Pain location, timing, fever, vomiting, bowel changes, urinary symptoms, and travel history help a clinician judge the next step. Stomach ache has many causes, so do not use chills alone to identify one condition.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Eat light foods only when you feel able. Note your temperature, pain location, urine output, bowel symptoms, and any recent travel or mosquito exposure. Avoid alcohol and do not take leftover antibiotics.

Contact a clinician promptly if pain persists, fever develops, you cannot keep fluids down, urine becomes painful, or symptoms follow travel. Bring a list of medicines and describe how quickly the symptoms changed.

Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, very little urine, or mottled or unusually cold skin. Fever with a rapidly worsening overall condition also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether you need urine, blood, or other tests and which symptoms would change the urgency. Explain the exact pain site, fever pattern, vomiting or diarrhoea, urinary changes, travel, mosquito bites, and any conditions or medicines that may affect your care.
