Short answer

Childhood obesity is excess body fat that may affect health, growth, sleep, movement, or emotional wellbeing and needs supportive assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How clinicians assess it

A clinician considers height, weight, body-mass pattern, growth over time, puberty, family history, medicines, sleep, eating patterns, activity, and mental wellbeing. A single number or visual impression cannot describe the whole picture. Children may develop high blood pressure, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or breathing problems during sleep, although these conditions are not inevitable.

The aim is better health and development, not shame or sudden restriction. The child’s household and environment influence routines, food access, movement, sleep, and stress, so care usually includes the family.

Support healthy change

Book a review if weight is rising quickly, movement is difficult, sleep is disturbed, or the child feels distressed. Keep regular meals, offer water often, include varied foods, plan enjoyable activity, and protect sleep. Make changes for the whole household so the child is not singled out.

A clinician can check blood pressure, growth, sleep symptoms, and signs of glucose problems. Ask about structured support when home changes are difficult. Avoid crash diets, weight-loss products, or teasing; these can worsen physical and emotional wellbeing.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for breathing pauses during sleep, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, marked thirst with frequent urination, or sudden weakness. Arrange a routine review for persistent snoring, daytime sleepiness, joint pain, low mood, bullying, or rapid weight change.

Questions to ask

How is my child’s growth tracking over time? Should we check blood pressure, glucose, sleep, or liver health? Which family changes are realistic, and what support is available if my child is being bullied or feeling low?

When should a child be assessed?
