What should you know about childhood chickenpox vaccine?

Chickenpox is caused by varicella. Vaccination gives the immune system a safer way to recognise the virus before an infection occurs. It can reduce the chance of illness and may make illness less severe, but it does not make every future rash automatically safe to ignore. The vaccine is not the same as treatment for an established infection. A clinician considers the child's age, previous chickenpox or vaccination, immune health, allergies, current illness, and possible exposure when discussing it.

Bring the child's immunisation history and tell the clinician about serious allergies, immune problems, long-term medicines, recent fever, or a known exposure.
