What should you know about chikungunya virus infection?

After a bite from an infected mosquito, symptoms may include a sudden fever, intense joint pain, muscle aches, headache, tiredness, and sometimes a rash. The joints may remain painful or stiff after the initial fever improves. This pattern can be disruptive even when the illness is managed at home.

Other infections can cause a similar picture, so symptoms alone cannot confirm chikungunya. A clinician may use the exposure story, physical examination, and testing suited to the stage of illness.

Rest, maintain fluids, and check with a clinician or pharmacist before using fever or pain medicine, particularly if you have liver, kidney, stomach, bleeding, or pregnancy concerns. Keep mosquitoes from biting you with repellent, long clothing, and screened rooms.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain limits walking or sleep, fever is concerning, you have recently travelled, or symptoms are not improving. Record temperature changes, new symptoms, and medicines taken.

Go for urgent assessment if you develop breathing problems, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, or a marked decline. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with significant medical conditions should seek advice earlier when unwell.
