Chiggers rash: symptoms and practical care

Chiggers are very small mites found in some grassy or wooded settings. They can cause a delayed itchy reaction after outdoor contact. The bumps may cluster near ankles, waistbands or areas where fabric held against the body. Scratching can create cuts and make a secondary skin infection more likely.

Other conditions can resemble this pattern. Drug Rash may follow a new medicine, while Intertrigo affects rubbing, moist folds. A clinician may also consider Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis or another cause when the timing does not fit outdoor exposure.

Shower or wash exposed skin, launder the clothing worn outdoors, and use cool compresses for short periods. Choose loose clothing while the skin settles. A pharmacist can help select an itch-relief option and explain where it should not be applied, especially on broken skin or near the eyes.

Try not to scratch. Clean any small breaks gently and watch them for increasing redness, tenderness or discharge. For future walks, protective clothing and prompt washing may reduce further exposure.

Arrange an assessment when the rash keeps spreading, becomes painful, develops pus, or fails to settle after reasonable skin care. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly worsening whole-body reaction.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with chigger exposure, whether a skin scraping or other check is needed, and which itch treatment fits your age and medical history. Tell the clinician when the outdoor exposure happened and list any new medicines or skin products.
