Chigger bite rash: what to know

Small red bumps may appear where clothing presses against the skin, such as around sock lines, waistbands or other covered areas. Itching can become more noticeable after the bite, and scratching may break the skin. Chiggers do not burrow into the skin or remain attached for days.

A rash after outdoor exposure is not automatically a chigger reaction. Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Scabies or Ringworm can look different and need different care. A clinician can assess the distribution, timing and appearance.

Wash the affected skin and clothing, then use a cool compress and keep fingernails short to reduce scratching damage. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable anti-itch product is appropriate for your age, pregnancy status and skin location. Avoid applying harsh household chemicals or repeatedly rubbing the bumps.

If the rash followed a walk through grass or brush, covering exposed skin and washing after future outings may reduce repeat bites. Photographing the rash before treatment can help if it changes.

Arrange medical review if redness, warmth, pain, swelling or drainage spreads, or if the itch prevents sleep despite sensible care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Ask whether the pattern fits a chigger reaction, whether another rash such as Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis should be considered, and which treatment is safe for the affected area. Mention recent outdoor exposure, new medicines and anyone else at home who is itchy.
