What should you know about chickenpox vaccine GSK?

It is a live weakened-virus vaccine designed to train immune recognition of varicella. It can reduce the chance of developing chickenpox and may make illness milder if infection occurs. A clinician must check your age, health, pregnancy status, immune system, medicines, and vaccination history before recommending it.

Vaccination is different from treatment after exposure or treatment for an active rash. It does not treat existing chickenpox. The vaccine may cause temporary soreness, redness, swelling, tiredness, or fever. A small blister-like rash can occur in some people. These reactions are usually limited, but tell your clinician about previous severe vaccine reactions or conditions affecting immunity.

Bring any immunisation record and a list of medicines to the appointment. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, immune-suppressing treatment, a recent blood product, or a current illness. Follow the schedule supplied by your clinician; do not arrange an extra dose simply because the product is made by GSK. After vaccination, keep the injection site clean and monitor how you feel.

If a fever or skin blisters develop, avoid close contact with people who are pregnant, severely immunocompromised, or too young for vaccination until a clinician advises you. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination. Do not assume every post-vaccination rash is harmless; describe its timing and appearance.
