Chickenpox vaccine during pregnancy

Chickenpox vaccination is a live vaccine, so routine vaccination is usually deferred during pregnancy. This does not mean that every exposure will cause illness, and an accidental vaccination before pregnancy was recognised is not, by itself, a reason to panic. The useful question is whether you are already immune, based on reliable medical history or records, and whether you have had a recent exposure. Infection with chickenpox during pregnancy can require prompt medical review because the health of both parent and baby must be considered. Shingles is related to the same virus but is a different presentation.

Call your maternity team or GP promptly after close contact with someone who has chickenpox or shingles, especially if you do not know whether you have had chickenpox or vaccination. Do not arrange a vaccine appointment without telling the clinician that you are pregnant. They can review your history and decide whether post-exposure protection, monitoring, or treatment is appropriate. If you develop fever or a new blistering rash, avoid close contact with vulnerable people and ask before taking medicines. Antiviral treatment may be considered in some situations, with the choice and timing tailored to pregnancy.

Seek urgent advice for breathing difficulty, severe headache, confusion, dehydration, a rapidly spreading rash, or fever with blisters. Contact your maternity team without delay after a significant exposure if you are not known to be immune. Do not wait for a rash before seeking guidance: preventive options are time-sensitive and depend on the exposure and your pregnancy details.
