Chickenpox in pregnancy treatment

Chickenpox is caused by varicella infection and can be more serious for a pregnant person than for some other adults. The pregnancy stage, time since exposure, rash pattern, fever, breathing symptoms, and immune health all affect the next step. The infection can also require discussion with the maternity team about the baby’s wellbeing. Do not rely on a photograph or a past memory of chickenpox to confirm the diagnosis.

Call your GP, obstetric team, or maternity service promptly if you have had close contact with chickenpox or develop fever, skin blisters, or a new rash. Mention the date of exposure, the first day of symptoms, your pregnancy stage, and whether you have had chickenpox or vaccination before. Stay away from people at higher risk until advised, and use fluids, rest, loose clothing, and clinician-approved comfort measures. A clinician may prescribe antiviral treatment after weighing benefits and risks; do not self-medicate or use another person’s tablets. The chickenpox vaccine is not used during pregnancy, so discuss future prevention after specialist advice.

Seek urgent medical help for shortness of breath, chest pain, severe cough, confusion, a severe headache, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact your maternity team urgently for reduced fetal movement once you have been advised how to monitor it, vaginal bleeding, contractions, or any concern about your pregnancy. A fever that is difficult to control or widespread, painful blisters also warrants prompt review.

Ask whether the rash needs testing, whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, how to manage fever safely, and who should monitor the pregnancy. Also ask how long to avoid close contact, what to do after a household exposure, and when follow-up is needed.
