Chickenpox in mouth treatment

Chickenpox lesions can appear on the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, or the roof of the mouth. They may break and leave painful areas that make chewing and swallowing unpleasant. The mouth findings can appear with fever and the familiar itchy skin-blister rash. A clinician may need to confirm the diagnosis, particularly if the rash is atypical, the person has received vaccination, or another infection could look similar.

Supportive care includes regular sips of cool fluid, soft foods, and avoiding citrus, chilli, very salty food, and hot drinks. Use only medicines recommended for the person’s age and medical history. A clinician may consider antiviral treatment for some people when timing, age, pregnancy, immune health, or severity makes it useful; it is not suitable for everyone and should not be started from someone else’s prescription. Antihistamine treatment can address itch elsewhere on the body but is not a substitute for mouth care.

Contact a GP or urgent care service if mouth pain prevents normal drinking, swallowing becomes difficult, or the person shows signs of dehydration such as very little urine, dizziness, or marked tiredness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe headache, a stiff neck, or sudden deterioration. Medical review is particularly important for pregnancy, immune suppression, severe skin disease, or a very young infant.

Ask whether the mouth lesions fit chickenpox, which pain relief is safe, and whether an antiviral medicine is worth considering. Explain when the first spots appeared, how much the person is drinking, any regular medicines, and whether there is pregnancy or immune-system illness.
